Full description

Auschwitz-Birkenau is the largest death camp in human history, the site of mass destruction and genocide in Europe during World War II. Currently camp Auschwitz-Birkenau is a synonym for world’s most cruel terror, genocide and atrocities.

The camp was built by the Nazis in 1940 in the suburbs of Oswiecim. The total number of deaths and executions is estimated to be over 1.5 million people of 28 nationalities. Almost 90% of these people were Jews.

The former concentration camp leaves a deep impression, partly because it allows you to imagine the scale of the Holocaust. Since 1979 this site has been listed on the UNESCO Cultural and Natural World Heritage list.

After your visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau, head to the Wieliczka salt mine, one of the most treasured monuments in Polish cultural history. Over a million tourists from around the world visit the salt mine yearly to see its exquisite carvings and reliefs.

This unique place is listed on the UNESCO Cultural and Natural World Heritage List since 1978 placing it even higher on tourists' "to-do list". The miners left dozens of sculptures and bas-reliefs cut out of the salt, keeping their work alive for many further years.

There are 800 steps to climb of which 350 at the beginning take you down into the mine. There's a lift to the top of the mine at the end of the route.

A really good day - long but plenty of time to see everything & good breaks in between. Gregory, our driver, was fantastic and went to great lengths to make sure we had everything we needed and knew where we were going. The guides at both Auschwitz & the salt mines were really informative. Would recommend

Highly recommend this 2 in 1 trip to make the most efficient use of your time in Krakow, especially in the winter months. We were there in early November when the sun sets from 4pm so there is little sightseeing to do unless it’s indoors. The salt mines tour is (obviously) underground and by the time we arrived it was already 5pm and completely dark so we made the best use of the day. We were the first to get picked up for our English tour group at 9am and the driver arrived promptly. We stayed with the same group and had the same bus/driver the whole day so it was difficult to get lost and we could leave our extra belongings in the bus. Both tours were run excellently, and in fact the salt mines guide was extremely funny and charming which was welcomed after the Auschwitz-Birkenau tour (for which the guide was equally impressive). It was a long day but there were many short breaks along the way plus two long >1 hr bus trips and we were back in Krakow by dinnertime.
