The beaches of the "Pearl of the Andaman" (a nickname for Phuket) have always been the major attraction of this tourist destination. Yet there is more, and this half-day introduction to Phuket shows you there is much more than the beaches.
What to Expect
Your guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel/ resort on Phuket for a 4.5-hour exploration of some of Phuket’s most famous sites. The tour will give you a brief introduction of Phuket, its history and some of the most stunning sights on the island. You can choose to either take a morning or afternoon tour.
Start your journey with a visit to Phuket town, the main city on the island and an area rich in culture and history. A guided tour takes in the Sino-Portuguese style buildings and there is also an opportunity to shop at one of the many bustling local markets. Phuket town was originally settled about a century ago by Chinese residents of Malaysia who were drawn to the lucrative mineral deposits. Tin and rubber fortunes created by the great rush formed the great Sino-Thai dynasties which still dominate the economies of southern Thailand.
This road trip takes in many of the island’ s iconic buildings, such as glittering Wat Chalong and the impressive Big Buddha which sits high on a hill and provides spectacular views of the island. The most beautiful and renowned monastery housing bronze images of the monks Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang, who are highly respected by Phuket inhabitants. Luang Pho Chaem is famed for its abbot, Luang Phaw Chaem, who led Phuket people to fight Chinese tin mining tycoons who fomented unrest during the reign of King Rama V. The temple's highlight is a wax sculpture of the abbot housed in an air-conditioned Thai-style house next to the chapel.
The coastline road is especially panoramic and takes in Patong, Karon, Kata and Rawai. A highlight is a visit to the “Three Beaches" viewpoint which takes in a superb vista of the beautiful bays of Kata Noi, Kata, Karon and Kho Phu Island. Whether you are a first time visitor to the island or a returnee, this excursion will enrich your holiday memories of the “Pearl of the Andaman.”
Before the end of this half-day, make a final stop that shows you some of Phuket’s finest. Phuket is well-known for its gemstones and a plethora of stones that can be found in the grounds on the island. Ride into history as you go on a journey to get an up-close and personal view of gemstone mining.
After seeing some of the most precious stones around and displayed, you will be driven back to your hotel/ resort in Phuket.
