Take a break from busy Kathmandu and head to the countryside to see 2 typical Newari villages. Bungmati and Khokana offer you a peek into rural Nepali life. See Khokana villagers at work at traditional crafts and admire stunning temples in both villages.
What to Expect
You’ll be picked up at your Kathmandu hotel by your personal guide and driver and head out to the Newari villages of Khokana and Bungmati.
On this half-day tour you’ll start by driving south until you reach Khokana, a small Newari village located just 6 kilometers from Patan. As you soon see, traditional craftsmanship still plays an important role here.
Villagers can often be seen spinning, winnowing, and crushing mustard seeds. Mustard oil is the product for which Khokana is best known. You’ll note a broad street leading into the center of the village, with the 3-story Shree Rudrayani Temple situated on the left.
After exploring Khokana you’ll take a 20-minute walk to the village of Bungmati, passing through agricultural land on the way. Bungmati, like Khokana, is a Newari village where rural traditions are still followed. You’ll see typical Newari buildings and an interesting main square, home to the Ganesh and Machhindranath temples.
