Full description
Day 1: Arrival to Karpathos Airport & transfer to Diafani. Upon arrival to Karpathos airport, a transfer is arranged to the charming sea front village of Diafani. Settle into your room and enjoy the calmness of the surroundings. Day 2: Hike to Olympos and the summit of Profitis Ilias. The capital of northern Karpathos, Olympos is a village of exceptional beauty. Cross traditional villages, beautiful green valleys and verdant cliffs until you reach the settlement on the mountain slopes. Houses in Olympos are built amidst lush green forests and preserve their traditional color and layout. The village itself is a live museum with an idyllic atmosphere and a population of 400 inhabitants. Olympos retains an old fashioned way of life where traditional customs play an important role. Having reached Olympos you climb to Profitis Ilias peak (718 meters), to admire the magnificent view of the Aegean sea. Descend to Olympos to enjoy lunch (if you wish to do so) and explore the village.  Distance:  8 to 10 kilometers, estimated hiking time: 5.5 to 7 hours. Day 3: Hike Papa Minas Beach (circular route). Walk along gentle slopes, through pine trees, past olive groves and wheat fields to the pretty bay of Papa Mina with its pebble beach and shady Tamarisk trees. Enjoy swimming and snorkeling in this beautiful bay before you return back to Diafani. Distance: 7.5 kilometers, estimated hiking time: 3.5 hours. Day 4: Hike to Ancient Vroukounta from Avlona and then to Vananta Bay and Diafani. After a short transfer to Avlona, you begin to hike a stone path built in ancient times that descends upon Vroukounta. Vroukounta is a mystical area, where the ancient city state of Vrykous once stood. Discover 3500 year old ruins, the Church Cave of St. John and snorkel to admire underwater treasures. Next, hike up to the village of Avlona for a delicious homemade lunch (optional but highly recommended) in a famous local tavern. After lunch descend into Vananta by a stone path with exception views of the lovely bay. Distance: 10 kilometers, estimated hiking time:  5.5 hours. Day 5: Hike to Tristomo & Steno. Follow a cobbled road from Aviona to reach Tristomo, an almost deserted village, where one last family refuses to abandon their hometown. Admire the natural harbor set in a protected bay on the north-west coast with the spectacular panoramas. Continue to Aikaterini and Steno, to view the nearby island of Saria, here you board a traditional fishing boat that will return you to Diafani.  Distance: 8.4 kilometers, estimated hiking time: 3.5 hours. Day 6: Explore the uninhabited island of Saria. Cross by boat to Saria Island, traverse the island on foot to Palatia Beach for a BBQ lunch and relaxing break. Saria was once part of Karpathos until erosion reshaped the island. Explore the many ancient monuments, ruins and remains of past settlements. According to mythology, the island was created when Poseidon, in a battle with Titan, cut off a piece from Karpathos and buried it under his opponent. Ruins of the city are sunken in the Strait of Tristomou, between Karpathos and Saria. The island was said to be the base of Saracen pirates and signs indicate the existence of an Apollo Porthmiou sanctuary. Human presence can be traced to the Neolithic and early Bronze Age. Spot rare plant and animal species as the northern Karpathos, Saria, and surrounding sea are all protected areas of Natura 2000. Finally, you will return to Diafani via boat. Distance: 8 kilometers, estimated hiking time: 3 hours. Day 7: Free day with your choice of optional hiking or cooking class. Day 8: Return transfer to Karpathos Airport.
