Kalbarri: Cruise on the Murchison River

Kalbarri: Cruise on the Murchison River

We welcome you on board our vessel, there is a safety speech and induction prior to departure. We travel approx. 6km up the lower reaches of the Murchison (12km return cruise) - this is as far as any vessel can go. Interesting commentary is provided along the way from the fishing industry, history of the region, animals and plants, and we encourage you to join in and share your knowledge or you may just sit back, relax and take it all in. As the land begins to open up with wide spaces and low shrubbery, varieties of birdlife can be spotted. The lower reaches are home to a number of species of birdlife including ospreys, kites, pelicans, egrets, black swans and our local white breasted sea eagles. At times, kangaroos, emus and goats can be spotted on the riverbanks. The landscape elevates in sections with beautiful coloured rocks, and a narrow channel along goat island. At the turn around point we often stop at Rocky Crossing to stretch our legs, then make for the return journey with plenty of time to relax, take photos and enjoy. We finish our tour by venturing to the river mouth where the Murchison River meets the Indian Ocean, one of WA’s most treacherous channels. It’s impressive to see the power of the ocean and water move through this channel as boats come and go.

Kalbarri Whale Watching Tour

Kalbarri Whale Watching Tour

Reefwalker Ocean Discovery are the longest running whale watching company in Kalbarri and have been operating whale watching tours since 1992. Kalbarri is privileged with seasonal visits of the majestic Humpback Whale and the occasional Southern Right Whale. They begin to migrate past Kalbarri from June every year from the food-rich southern ocean to breeding grounds in the warm northern waters. The whales are seen traveling back south around August en route to the colder seas to grow and mature. Following the continental shelf, they embrace the coast as they travel through the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. These majestic creatures play, frolic & bask in the pristine waters of Gantheaume Bay on their migratory route along the West Australian coastline. Each whale watching trip is an opportunity to get close to these gentle giants, witnessing a unique phenomenon right on Kalbarri's doorstep. In the rare event we are unable to sight whales, you’re most welcome to join the following scheduled tour free of charge. Join Reefwalker Ocean Discovery for a memorable whale watching experience!

Day 1 Perth – Kalbarri We begin today’s journey via Perth’s wine growing region, the picturesque Swan Valley. New Norcia, the only Benedictine Mission in Western Australia and its Spanish atmosphere will invite you to a break. This carefully chosen, beautiful piece of land represents an important era of Australian history. We head north towards Geraldton, the sunniest town in W.A. Cruising along the coastal road we enter the Kalbarri National Park via Port Gregory. You can experience some of the most picturesque grazing land as well as the rough coastline. In the early evening we will arrive in the “laid back village” of Kalbarri. Day 2 Kalbarri – Monkey Mia After breakfast we farewell Kalbarri. We continue into the Kalbarri National Park with breathtaking views down to the Murchison Gorge. Depending upon the season, our drive through the Kalbarri National Park to the World Heritage area of Shark Bay will be escorted by the famous wildflowers. Stop at Hamelin Pool where the world best known colony of stromatolites can be admired. In the afternoon we arrive in Monkey Mia, home of the well-known dolphins. Nearly every day of the year they come to the shore to give you a unique experience that will never be forgotten. Day 3 Monkey Mia – Geraldton In the morning you have the opportunity to come face to face with these famous dolphins. Before our next stop at Shell Beach we pay homage to this World Natural Heritage area with a visit to the Shark Bay Interpretive Centre in Denham. Typical „Outback Australian impressions” will accompany you on the drive to Geraldton. A visit to Mount Scott gives you the opportunity of an outlook over the town of Geraldton and Grey’s Bay. Here is also the memorial for the victims of the sunken warship HMAS Sydney II. Day 4 Geraldton – Perth Our sightseeing this morning brings us to the architecturally interesting St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in the town centre. Leaving Geraldton, we head south along the coast via Leeman and Jurien Bay towards Cervantes. Here we visit the “Lobster Shack” and – after a delicious lunch – we get a lot of insights into this multimillion dollars export industry. In the afternoon we will visit Nambung National Park. The Pinnacles are among the most visited natural wonders of the state. Thousands of limestone pillars rise out of a stark landscape of yellow sand. There is ample time to explore the area and to take some colourful photos from these amazing formations. These impressions of lights and colours will stay with you for many years to come. We arrive back in Perth early evening when you will be transferred back to your chosen hotel where our round trip concludes.

What an unforgettable adventure! As a female solo traveler, I'm always mindful of my surroundings, but thanks to Geoff, our tour guide, and the wonderful group dynamics, I felt safe and at ease throughout the journey. The itinerary was packed with thrilling experiences, stunning scenery, and unforgettable wildlife encounters. These memories will forever hold a special place in my heart, and I wholeheartedly recommend Autopia's services to anyone looking to explore this incredible part of the world. Thank you, Geoff, for creating such a memorable trip!

Tour was fantastic, but you should really think about put on extra guide, because they are working to hard. Big cheers for Dani, who did a fantastic work and worked 18 hours a day, but that’s not fair to put him in that position.

An unbelievably great trip! Hundreds of kilometers, but the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets, beaches and wildlife. Sensational guide and great group.
