Experience the diversity of South Africa on this 12-day tour from Johannesburg. Enjoy a colorful tour combining wildlife in Kruger National Park, the crafts and cultural traditions of Swaziland and Zululand, and the scenic diversity of the Garden Route.
What to Expect
This 12-day tour takes you on a discovery of South Africa’s diverse landscape. As well as visiting South Africa’s largest cities including Johannesburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth, and Cape Town, you will also explore the country’s stunning countryside including Mpumalanga, Kruger National Park, Zululand, Knysna, Oudtshoorn, and Stellenbosch. On this tour you will also visit Swaziland and have the opportunity to spot the “Big Five” animals as you enjoy a safari among spectacular scenery.

Day 1: Johannesburg – Mpumalanga
You will depart from Johannesburg and travel to Mpumalanga Province, known as “Paradise Country”. You will drive along the spectacular “Panorama Route”, offering views of amazing scenery including the 26-kilometre Blyde River Canyon and the historic God’s Window, where you can admire the breathtaking view (weather permitting) of the edge of the escarpment taking in the Kruger National Park. You will continue on to an area near Hazyview for your overnight stay.

Day 2: Mpumalanga
The day begins with early morning coffee or tea, followed by a game drive through Kruger National Park with a packed breakfast. The park offers some of the best game viewing and wildlife opportunities in the world and you will soon appreciate the challenges of managing this unique reserve. You can spend the afternoon at your leisure at the hotel or you may wish to enjoy some more safari sightseeing – late afternoon open-vehicle game drives are available as an optional extra.

Day 3: Mpumalanga – Kruger Park – Mpumalanga
Enjoy a thrilling early morning open vehicle game drive in Kruger National Park with a pre-packed breakfast. Kruger is one of the world’s greatest national parks, home to a stunning array of wildlife. Search for the “Big Five” including rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard, and elephant, as well as prolific birdlife and numerous other animals. You can spend the afternoon at your leisure at the hotel or you can join a community visit to the Sizabantwana Children Care Centre for a tour and a brief look into the lives of the children that live there. This visit offers you the opportunity to understand more about the rural communities and their lifestyles and to interact with them in a secure and optimistic environment. You will then return to your hotel where open -vehicle game drives are available as an optional extra.

Day 4: Mpumalanga – Swaziland
This morning you will travel to Swaziland, an independent kingdom within the borders of South Africa, known for its lovely scenery, crafts, and colorful indigenous culture. Visit the Ngwenya glass factory, where you can watch talented glass blowers create a range of enchanting African animals, birds, and fish, as well as tableware made from 100% recycled glass that is collected by the children of Swaziland. In the afternoon you have the opportunity to go on an optional complimentary excursion to a Swazi candle factory, where you can watch Swazi wax artists make beautiful candles. Stay overnight in Swaziland.

Day 5: Swaziland – Zululand
After breakfast you will continue south through Swaziland before re-entering South Africa. You till then travel to the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve, which contains an immense diversity of fauna and flora and is particularly famous for its conservation of black and white rhino. Enjoy an afternoon game drive before continuing to your hotel in the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi region, where you will stay overnight.

Day 6: Zululand – Durban
After breakfast, travel to a traditional Zulu village to experience the local culture, dancing, and a delicious ethnic lunch. The journey continues to Durban, passing traditional Zulu Kraals, Eucalyptus plantations, and sugar cane fields. Stay overnight in Durban.

Day 7: Durban – Port Elizabeth
After breakfast, you will transfer to the airport in Durban for the short southward flight to Port Elizabeth, where you will be met by your representative and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at leisure to relax or explore. Port Elizabeth, known as the “friendly city”, has a wonderful climate and offers plenty to see and do, such as the oceanarium and snake house. Stay overnight in Port Elizabeth.

Day 8: Port Elizabeth – Knysna
You will head westwards along the Garden Route, which follows the Indian Ocean coastline and is bordered inland by soaring mountain ranges and indigenous forests. You will arrive at your hotel in Knysna, known as the oyster box of South Africa, nestling on the banks of a beautiful lagoon in the heart of the Garden Route. The afternoon is at leisure to relax or explore the town. Stay overnight in Knysna.

Day 9: Knysna
After a leisurely breakfast you will enjoy a lagoon cruise to the Featherbed Nature Reserve, where you can take a trailer ride to the top of the Western Head to enjoy panoramic views of the town and lagoon. After returning for lunch under the milkwood trees, you can spend the afternoon at your leisure to further explore this charming town set around a natural harbor lagoon.

Day 10: Knysna – Oudtshoorn
Travel through the Outeniqua Pass to Oudtshoorn, the center of the world’s ostrich farming industry. You will enjoy a guided tour of an ostrich farm before taking a tour of the spectacular limestone caverns of the Cango Caves, one of the world’s great natural wonders that have been sculpted by nature through the ages. In the late afternoon you will travel to your hotel in time to check-in. Stay overnight in Oudtshoorn.

Day 11: Oudtshoorn – Stellenbosch
Enjoy an early morning meerkat safari. Witness these incredible wild, habituated creatures emerging out of their burrows, in time to soak up the sun before they head about their daily activities (weather permitting). After breakfast, continue to Barrydale for a local farm school visit (subject to the school being open). Continue to Stellenbosch, the second oldest city in South Africa. Overnight in Stellenbosch.

Day 12: Stellenbosch – Cape Town
Enjoy wine tasting before travelling to Cape Town, arriving in the late morning. Your tour ends here and you can request to disembark at Cape Town International Airport.

Private game lodge option
If you’ve always dreamed of experiencing the luxury of staying in one of Africa’s legendary game lodges, then this option is for you. You will have the opportunity to maximize your experience of wildlife in the region, thereafter rejoining the tour with minimum disruption. Your tour itinerary is the same as above except for the following days:

Day 2: Mpumalanga – Sabi Sand Conservancy
After breakfast you will travel through Kruger National Park, with game viewing en route. At Skukuza Airport you will be met by the game rangers and transferred to Sabi Sabi Game Reserve for lunch. The rest of the afternoon is free for you to relax until your late afternoon open-vehicle game drive. This area offers a great bio-diversity of habitat and wildlife, giving an excellent chance of experiencing close encounters with the “Big Five” – elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard, and lion. Stay overnight on a full board basis.

Day 3: Sabi Sand Conservancy – Mpumalanga
Start your day with an early morning game drive followed by breakfast at the lodge. After breakfast, you will transfer to meet your tour guide and on your return, you will enjoy a game drive through Kruger National Park before rejoining the main tour.
