Enjoy an overnight trip to Pushkar and Ajmer, major pilgrimage centers in Rajasthan. Visit Pushkar Lake, believed by Hindus to be as old as creation itself. See many Hindu temples, including the 14th-Century Brahma Temple.
What to Expect
Go to Pushkar and Ajmer on this overnight tour to explore 2 of India’s major pilgrimage centers. Located on the banks of Pushkar Lake, Pushkar is believed by Hindus to be as old as creation, and has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries. You will visit the 52 bathing ghats built around the lake, as well as the historic Brahma Temple. Continue to Ajmer through a green oasis of hills, surrounded by the Aravalli Mountains.
Day 1: Jaipur - Pushkar
Following a pick-up from your hotel in Jaipur at 09:00, drive to the historic town of Pushkar, one of the 5 sacred dhams, or pilgrim sites, for devout Hindus. Reach Pushkar by noon and check in to your hotel, with time to relax.
In the evening you can visit the temple of Brahma, the only Indian temple dedicated to Lord Brahma. Built of marble, its walls are adorned with silver coins. Tour some of the town’s other temples, located next to the sacred lake.
According to legend, Brahma performed a yagya here while looking for a place for Mahayagna. He dropped his lotus flower to kill the demon Vajranash, and the lake emerged. Named after the lotus flower, the lake is surrounded by beautiful white washed temples and bathing ghats, and is today revered as one of the most sacred places in India.
Day 2: Pushkar - Ajmer - Jaipur
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before check out and the drive to Ajmer. Located approximately 12 miles (20 kilometers) from Puhskar, the city sits in a lush green oasis of the barren hills.
Founded by Raja Ajay Pal Chauhan in the 7th-Century, Ajmer continued to be a major center of Chauhan power until 1193, when Prithviraj Chauhan lost it to Mohammed Ghauri. Ajmer has been home to many dynasties, each leaving behind indelible marks of their traditions, converting the city into a fascinating mix of cultures and a blend of Hinduism and Islam.
Today, Ajmer is a popular pilgrimage center for Hindus as well as Muslims. Especially famous is the Dargah Sharif Tomb of the Sufi Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti, which is equally revered by both religions.
Visit the Dargah before your drive back to Jaipur. Back in the city, you can transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
