What to Expect
Discover the architectural jewels of the capital of Rajasthan on this 2-day sightseeing tour of Jaipur. You will visit the ornate City Palace complex in the heart of historic Jaipur, and travel to the foothills of the Aravalli mountain range to ride an elephant to the legendary Amber Fort. Learn about Raj royalty and glimpse Murghal architecture as you immerse yourself in the city fondly known as the “Pink City.”
Day 1: Jaipur
Upon arrival at Jaipur Airport, a tour representative will be waiting to transfer you to your overnight accommodation. Built in 1727 AD by the Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, Jaipur is full of pink sandstone palaces and forts, and a place of colorful bazaars bursting with traditional handicrafts. Part of India’s famed Golden Triangle, you will be steeped in history and old-world grandeur.
Day 2: Jaipur
Begin your full-day excursion with a visit to the Amber Fort, approximately 6.5 miles (11 kilometers) outside of Jaipur. The former ancient capital of Jaipur state, the dream-like white marble and red sandstone Amber Fort rose from the high hill of Amer in 1592. Built by Raja Man Singh, the Rajput commander of Akbar's army, it is a superb example of Rajput architecture. To reach the fort you will climb on the back of a mighty Asian elephant and journey up the Aravalli foothills to the fort entrance.
Return to Jaipur for an afternoon city tour. Among the highlights you will visit are the miniature City Palace complex, boasting a beautiful mix of Rajasthan and Mughal architecture. Continue to the large Jantar Mantar observatory, built by Maharaja Jai Singh in 1728. Admire the façade of the Hawa Mahal, poetically known as the “Palace of Winds.” Constructed for the royal ladies to watch royal processions without being seen, it provides a perfect opportunity to learn more about the Raj rulers.
Before you depart from Jaipur, you will visit a jewelry-making workshop to admire some of Rajasthan’s traditional handicrafts. Among the treasures the region is also noted for are the embroidered sandals known as jooties, and eye-catching blue pottery decorated with bird and animal motifs.
