Istanbul boasts towering mosques, ancient stadiums, grand bazaars, and one of the world’s most important waterways. On a private day tour you’ll discover these highlights and other historical monuments in this city that spans Europe and Asia.
What to Expect
On this full-day private tour of Istanbul you’ll visit many of the city’s top sites and gain a deeper understanding of its history.
Your day begins at the Hagia Sophia, one of Istanbul's greatest architectural masterpieces. This 6th century basilica features towering minarets and beautiful handcrafted mosaics, and is often referred to as the 8th wonder of the world.
Across the street from the Hagia Sophia is the Blue Mosque, one of the most famous landmarks in Turkey, and a monument to the Ottoman Empire. Its name derives from the more than 20,000 Iznik blue tiles that adorn its façade and interior.
Step back in time with a visit to the Hippodrome, dating back to Egyptian times. Imagine what life might have been like as locals traveled to see the chariot races at this famous sporting arena. You can still see relics of the past dotting the site.
For a chance of pace your guide will take you on a shopping trip to the Grand Bazaar, where you can try your hand at haggling on everything from fine leather goods to spices and sweets, and more. The market boasts around 4,000 stalls, so you’re sure to find something you like, and maybe even a few gifts as well.
After lunch you’ll head to Topkapi Palace, the official and primary city residence of the Ottoman sultans for the 400-year period from 1465-1856. Today it serves as a museum and monument to that time. You’ll have ample time to stroll through its gardens and explore its galleries filled with fine Chinese porcelain and silver. See many of the garments worn by the sultans and members of their families.
