What to Expect
Discover the old Genoese quarter of Istanbul on this 7-hour walking tour of Galata and learn the Byzantine history of one of the most colorful areas of the city.

Your tour begins at Taksim Square, and wanders down the little side streets off Istiklal Street, where lively restaurants and one-off stores are the norm. Pause at one of the intriguing coffee shops to chat with your guide. Then, continue to see Armenian and Romaic churches, ancient alleys, and more.

In the Byzantine era, the hillside was covered with orchards and called Sykai (Fig Orchard), or Peran en Sykais (Fig Field on the Other Side - on the "other side" of the Golden Horn). It was during this time that a fortress was built by Emperor Theodosius II, and the name Galata took hold, becoming a Genoese colony from the 6th to 15th centuries.

Walk around the historic Galata Tower, where many churches, synagogues, and local businesses huddle, and hear the stories, myths, and legends of Istanbul on every street corner.
