What to Expect
Take a full-day guided walking tour of Istanbul, and discover all the major sights from the city’s Ottoman and Byzantine empires.

Following a pick-up from your hotel at approximately 08:00-08:30, visit Topkapi Palace, home to the Ottoman sultans for almost 400 years. Marvel at its intricate courtyards and outhouses. Learn how it gradually lost its importance as the sultans preferred to spend more time in their new palaces along the Bosphorus Strait. Take an optional tour of the harem (at your own expense).

Discover a cathedral under the streets at the Basilica Cistern (Underground Water Palace). Continue to the Roman Hippodrome at the heart of Byzantine Istanbul. Then, break for lunch.

Continue after lunch with a visit to the Hagia Sophia Museum. Built as an orthodox church around 537, the former Christian church of the “Holy Wisdom” was later converted into a mosque after Constantinople was conquered by the Ottoman Turks. Next, see the blue Iznik tiles of the iconic Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmet Mosque).

Continue to the site of the Milion of Constantinople, and see where the Byzantine zero-mile marker (the starting-place for the measurement of distances for all the roads leading to the cities of the Byzantine Empire) was placed. View the Tomb of the Sultan Mahmud, and see an ancient Ottoman cemetery. Go to the Column of Constantinople (also known as the “Cemberlitas” or “Burnt Column”) constructed on the orders of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great in 330 AD.

End the tour at approximately 16:30 at the Grand Bazaar, where you are free to haggle for souvenir bargains, or follow your guide’s tips on how to get home!
