Discover the tombs of pharaohs on a 12-hour tour to the pyramids of Dahschur and Saqqara from Hurghada. Learn why Pharaoh Snofru abandoned the concept of the “step” pyramid as seen in Saqqare to create what we now think of as a “real” pyramid.
What to Expect
Following a pick-up from your hotel in Hurghada, drive north and get some early impressions about the typical landscape of Egypt en route to the pyramids of Memphis and Saqqara.
Upon arrival in the old capital of Memphis, marvel at the toppled colossal statue of Pharaoh Ramesses II and the Alabaster Sphinx. Continue to the ancient cemetery of Saqqara, where you will see monumental tombs, pyramid structures, and numerous mastabas (flat-roofed, rectangular tombs). View the tomb of Pharaoh Djoser in the famous 4,600-year-old Step Pyramid.
Go to the Imhotep Museum, named after Djoser’s great architect, to see artifacts from Ancient Egypt. Learn more about the unique architecture of this historic civilization and empire.
Then, go to the royal necropolis at Dahschur, and see numerous pyramids and graves, including those built by the Pharaoh Snofru, who abandoned the concept of the "step" pyramids to construct what we understand today as a “true” pyramid.
See the ruins of the Black Pyramid, damaged when water seeped into the walls and myriad corridors. It’s an impressive (if creepy) sight. Then, transfer back towards the Red Sea for a drop off at your hotel in Hurghada.
