The historic Cape Bruny Lighthouse sits perched on the cliff tops above the pounding. Join a fully guided tour and climb the spiral stairs to the prism room and out onto the balcony.
What to Expect
Join this tour and experience Bruny Island's most iconic and historic landmark open daily. Built by hard working convicts in 1835 and first operated in 1836.
The guides will meet you at the lighthouse and the experience begins. You will first learn a bit about the making of the lighthouse and why it is where it is. After this you will begin the climb up the magnificent iron spiral staircase to the first level where the lightkeepers would have once sat to do their daily observations and record the weather and shipping movements. Then, take the slightly steeper stairs to the light room or prism room where your guide will explain how all the mechanisms operated. You will be amazed at the huge lead crystal prisms that guided the shipping around our coastlines for 160 years.
It's now time to step out through the huge heavy cast iron door to the balcony 114m above the sea. The door was obviously built to withstand powerful winds and driving rain. Once out on the balcony the views are second to none, the perfect opportunity to get some amazing photos.
Watch the water below for seals and albatross that live and feed in these waters.
The tour lasts for up to 30 mins and tours operate on demand between 10:00 am and 16:00 am (may change at certain times of the year).
