  • Private Tour to Long Tan Former Australian Military Base

    4. Private Tour to Long Tan Former Australian Military Base

Arrive in Long Tan, deeply etched into ANZAC folklore. Find out how, in the late afternoon of August 18, 1966, D Company, despite being heavily outnumbered, fought off a large Viet Cong assault of regimental strength during a grueling three-hour battle. The first stop on your half-day tour is the former site of Australia's Nui Dat Task Force Base (Nui Dat SAS Hill). The occupation of Nui Dat required the removal of all inhabitants from within a 4-kilometer radius of the base, therefore the people of Long Tan and Long Phuoc villages were forcibly resettled. Little remains of this military camp today except for the columns of the main gate. The former runway is now a street in the local village, and the old helipad is now a soccer field. Feel like we got a real feel for the places we went. But... Don’t think it needs the horse ride part. It was too hot for the horses and they were very skinny.

I arrived in Ho Chi Mihn City with a bad case of food poisoning. I spent two of my three days in the city recovering, so on the last day I decided to book this tour to make the most of my final day in the city. Mario was a great tour guide and I really got a great bang for my buck and time on this tour. There are some parts that feel a little touristy and cheesy, but overall it's a fun experience and I learned a lot.

We made the tour with our guide Tu. He's a very cheerful person, was always open to our questions and shared so many interesting facts about Vietnamese culture with us. I loved how diverse the tour was with its many different activities, food and even some crafts presentations. Maybe the condition of the bicycles could have been a little better (the brakes didn't work properly and the saddles weren't really adjusted), but that's just a minor point. The kayaking part was all the more entertaining. :)
