Overview
Are you ready for the real Crete? Do you want to explore the nature of an unknown gorge, the hospitality of the Cretan village people and follow the Venetians opinion that you’ve found the entrance of the Labyrinth of the Minotaur? Join and be amazed.
What to Expect
After pick-up from the hotel and a short drive to a small village in Central Crete, next to the capital of Heraklion, the tour will start in a leisure and friendly atmosphere. Directly behind the village is situated a wonderful hiking path that follows the river bed and rises on the most beautiful views from the District of Heraklion. While exploring the environment and enjoying the fantastic atmosphere you’ll start see the amazing gorge of Makelarianos. After a 1.5 kilometer climb you’ll reach, via the donkey path, the beautiful traditional village of Skotino. First you'll have a coffee break where you’ll learn a lot about their history, lifestyle and hospitality.

After that you’re on your way to finding out if this place is really one of the most important places in Minoan history. Discover one of the most important and sacred caves of Crete, the cave of Agia Paraskevi, which is dedicated to the church of Saint Paraskevi built on top of it. The cave is 160 meters deep and 36 meters wide. The first archaeological examinations on the site were carried out by Sir Arthur Evans, the well-known British archaeologist who unearthed and partially restored the palace of Knossos in 1933. Later excavations have unearthed vases, bone needles and figurines dating as far back as Minoan times, suggesting that the cave has had religious significance. To this day, pilgrims leave votives and offerings.

While the team prepares the delicious BBQ, you’ll have the possibility of marveling at the beauties of the spectacular complexes of stalagmites and stalactites. Let your mind wander, and you’ll make out all sorts of shapes (a bear, a dragon, a head) in the dim light. After the delicious BBQ, take a leisurely walk on an easy path it goes back to the starting point. End the day with a refreshing drink among villagers and, with many new impressions, return to your hotel or apartment.
