What to Expect
Discover the beauty of Sapa and the Muong Hoa River valley on a 4-day trekking and homestay adventure. Visit H’mong, Day, and Red Dao ethnic villages, meet local people, and enjoy stunning landscapes of terraced rice fields and waterfalls.
Day 1: Hanoi – Night Train to Lao Cai
You’ll be picked up at your hotel and transferred to the Hanoi railway station at 20:30. The train departs for Lao Cai at 21:50. Overnight on the train in a shared sleeping compartment (2 upper and 2 lower berths per compartment).
Day 2: Lao Cai – Sapa – Lao Chai – Tavan (Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner)
The train arrives in Lao Cai at 06:30. You’ll be picked up at the station for the 38-kilometer drive to Sapa. Enjoy breakfast at a local restaurant.
You’ll head from Sapa town down to Lao Chai village. Take in the magnificent views of terraced rice fields along the Muong Hoa River and meet ethnic groups (H’mong, Zao) en route. You’ll leave the main road to take a local path to Lao Chai village (H’mong). The walk continues on to Tavan village, where you can meet locals from the Day ethnic group.
Have lunch with a local family and then take some free time to discover life of the ethnic minority in Tavan village. Overnight at a Tavan village homestay.
Trekking distance: 9 kilometers
Day 3: Tavan – Giang Ta Chai – Sapa (Breakfast; Lunch)
Start the day after breakfast, heading up to Giang Ta Chai village of the Red Zao tribe, where you’ll have lunch. Take in amazing scenery and beautiful waterfalls in the afternoon before walking up to the main road, where you’ll be picked up by car. Ride back to Sapa, with stops along the way to take photos of the stunning valley. Enjoy the evening in the mountain town. Overnight at a 2-star hotel in Sapa.

Day 4: Cat Cat – Sin Chai – Lao Cai – Night Train to Hanoi (Breakfast; Lunch)
Check out of the hotel after breakfast and get ready for a 4-kilometer trek down to Cat Cat and Sin Chai village of the Black H'mong. Enjoy a picnic lunch at a waterfall and see the hydroelectric power station established by the French.
Head back to Sapa and freshen up with a shower in the hotel's day room before the drive to the Lao Cai railway station for the night train back to Hanoi.
The train departs at 21:45 and arrives in Hanoi at 05:30 the next morning. Overnight on the train in a shared sleeping compartment (2 upper and 2 lower berths per compartment).
