What to Expect
Spend four glorious days cycling through Mai Chau and Ninh Binh!
Day 1: Mai Chau to Buoc Village
Today you'll leave your hotel bright and early and drive southwest to Mai Chau. Here, you'll find yourself face to face with impressive mountain passes and glorious views over northern Vietnam. The drive is not difficult, and offers plenty of chances to hop off your bike to take some pictures of the surrounding valleys, sugarcane farms and rice paddies that dot the landscape. You will have refreshments along the way.
In Mai Chau, lunch will be served in Pom Coong, a village of Thai ethnic minority. Here, your lunch is served in a local house before you travel onto Buoc, another village of Thai minority. Here you will rest with dinner and an overnight stay in a traditional stilt-house with a Thai family. This 30km (18mi) ride is a perfect start to your adventure.
Day 2: Back Roads to Mai Chau
After a filling breakfast, we get the legs moving again with a ride on the back roads to Mai Chau. You will have lunch in Xo village, giving you yet another chance to experience the Thai minorities that live in these areas. After lunch, you'll continue along to Pom Coong village, with a dinner and overnight stay. This 35km (21mi) ride is a bit longer than yesterday, but your legs are strong and we'll make sure to take plenty of breaks along the way.
Day 3: Back to Ninh Binh
Today is yours to explore, and after breakfast we give you the bike to cycle around Mai Chau. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for some great deals on handmade Thai fabrics or homemade trinkets. There will be a lunch served in Mai Chau, and then we'll drive to Ninh bin. This is a beautiful 30km (21mi) ride, and we'll stay tonight in a hotel.
Day 4: Sightseeing and head back to Hanoi
Today you'll head over to Hoa Lu, the first capital of Vietnam, dating all the way back to the 8th century. Here your day includes lots of touring and climbing, as we give you plenty of chances to mount the steps to the temples high above. This gives you a great view of the "Halong Bay on the Rice Field."
After your tour, we hop back on our bikes for a tour of the limestone mountains that rise gracefully over the rice paddies. We ride for approximately 1 straight hour before arriving at Tam Coc, where lunch is served. No visit to these parts is complete without a rowing boat trip over the Halong Bay, so we'll make sure to stop and do that too! Tonight you'll drive back to Hanoi.
