This exciting and informative 2-hour tour takes you through Speicherstadt and the Kontorhaus District, which were recently listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The route of the tour is marked by historical buildings of Brick Expressionism.
What to Expect
Discover the historical Speicherstadt in Hamburg and admire the Kontorhaus District with the impressive office buildings. The Speicherstadt has been under protection of historical monuments since 1991 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many interesting museums are located here, such as the Speicherstadt Museum and the Spice Museum, as well as the Miniatur Wunderland and the Hamburg Dungeon.
Together with your guide, start the tour at Baumwall metro station and after taking a look at the historical Deichstrasse with its houses from the 17th century, cross over the Binnenhafenbrücke and stroll along the former customs canal with a fantastic look into the canals through the Speicherstadt. On this exciting tour, learn all about the origin of this unique warehouse complex and which professions existed here in the past. Hear how the goods still arrive in the buildings and why the buildings in the east have round towers.
Continuing on the sightseeing tour, see impressive Hamburg office buildings in the Kontorhaus District, such as the Chilehaus and Sprinkenhof. The Chilehaus built by Fritz Höger in 1924 is one of the most important examples of Brick Expressionism and was one of the first skyscrapers in Hamburg. Discover the “typewriter” of Hamburg and the incredibly beautiful courtyards and stairways (if open).
