What You'll Do
  • Hike through beautiful glacier ice
  • Ride the scenic Alaska Railroad
  • Experience the grandeur of an Alaskan glacier
  • Learn how to walk on ice in small groups
Experience awesome Alaskan wilderness on a 5-hour hike of the Spencer Glacier. Ride the Alaskan Railroad from Girdwood to the glacier enjoying spectacular views, and learn about the area’s natural history, ecology and glaciology as you hike.
What to Expect
Walk on blue ice with a professional glacier guide. Nowhere else in the world can you: ride a train, sea kayak & explore a glacier all in a day! Peer deep into crevasses, find ice caves & learn how glaciers are formed. Glacier access is by sea kayaking across the lake amidst icebergs. Experience the best guides & glacier hiking in Alaska only 1 hour from Anchorage!

From the Spencer Whistle Stop, glacier hikers load onto a shuttle for a 1 mile drive to AP’s basecamp at the edge of Spencer Lake. After a safety briefing, groups of 4 or less paddle their sea kayaks 1 hour and 1.5 miles across Spencer Glacier Lake, enjoying outstanding views of the Glacier and Icebergs floating in the lake.

After landing the Kayaks, a short off trail (rugged terrain) walk gains access onto the glacier. At the glaciers’ edge guests gear up with helmets, harnesses and crampons. After safety lessons and crampon practice by skilled and experienced glacier guides, groups travel onto the glacier and have about 2-3 hours to explore the amazing Ice features (blue ice, crevasses, ice caves, moulins, etc.). The 6 hours spent off the train includes many photo and rest stops to learn about interesting local wildlife, history and glaciology. AP maintains a weather-port for safety shelter and gear storage at our Spencer Glacier basecamp.

The maximum distance of hiking on the glacier is about 2 miles. Kayak/Glacier guides will pace the trip and total mileage to the groups’ fitness level, interests and ice/water conditions.
