Experience the rugged beauty of the Alaskan wilderness on a half-day excursion to Spencer Glacier. We’ll take you by train and bus to our base camp and then hike along the edge of Spencer Lake to view icebergs along the way.
What to Expect
Visit Alaska’s Chugach National Forest on a half-day excursion to view spectacular Spencer Glacier and the many icebergs floating in Spencer Lake. On this guided hike you’ll learn about blue ice up close and also about the amazing wildlife and history of this wilderness area.
Spencer Glacier is located just to the south of Portage Valley and the Turnagain Arm in the Kenai Mountains. At the beginning of our tour we’ll ride a train from Girdwood and you’ll view breathtaking scenes of glaciers and towering alpine peaks.
From the Spencer Whistle Stop, our small group will take a bus along a short unpaved road to our lakeside base camp.
Our hike will take us along the edge of the lake and we’ll stop at overlooks to enjoy scenic views of the glacier and icebergs floating in Spencer Lake. The trail is just over 2 miles of flat Forest Service-maintained trails. Although we don’t walk on the glacier during the hike we get right up to it!
There’ll be plenty of photo and rest stops during the hike when your guide will tell you about the area’s history, wildlife and glaciology.
