What to Expect
Explore the majestic heritage of Fujian Province and learn about the communal residences built of earth known as “tulou” in Yongding, sometimes called the “Kingdom of Fujian Tulou.”

En route from Xiamen, pass banana and coffee plantations, stopping at a tea plantation to pluck some tea leaves and breathe the fresh air. Visit a Chinese tea house to watch an intricate tea ceremony and taste teas from the Fujian area.

According to historical documents, tea has been produced in Fujian for more than 1,600 years, with some 336 varieties of tea plant, the largest in all China. There are 5 different types of tea in production - oolong, black, green, white, and scented tea - all originating in Fujian (except green tea)

Continue to Gaobei Tulou Cluster and visit the Chengqilou, the largest tulou in the area. Almost 300 years old, the Chengqilou consists of concentric circular buildings, with 400 rooms that house 80 families.

Go to the hillside Chuxi Tulou Cluster, and see the Jiqinglou, the largest and oldest of the circular tulou, built in 1419. Discover unusual western influences in the late Shengqilou, known as the “Prince of the Tulou,” as well as the Yuqinglou, now used as a family hotel.

Meet a local family in the afternoon to chat about their daily life and local Hakka customs. Then, hike to the top of the surrounding mountain for a bird’s eye view of Chuxi village. The rest of the afternoon, you are free to stroll around the village at leisure.
