Flores is one of the most unspoiled islands in the Indonesian archipelago. On this memorable 8-day trip you’ll sail to Rinca to see the Komodo dragon and the rare spiderweb rice fields, visit traditional villages, and climb the Kelimutu volcano.
What to Expect
Flores features beautiful beaches and a hilly inland that’s suitable for scenic walks. In addition, it is home to several tribes that still hold on to their traditions. Your 8-day excursion begins with relaxing, and at the same time exciting, boat trip to Rinca, where you’ll see the ancient and majestic Komodo dragon. Visit Manggarai, the most fertile area of the island, and a world where time stands still!

Day 1: Maumere
After your arrival in Flores you’ll spend the night in a pleasant hotel on the beach, just outside Maumere. There will be some time for you to enjoy the area, relax, or perhaps snorkel in the clear blue waters.

Day 2: Maumere – Moni
This day is reserved for a tour through stunning mountain scenery. The village of Sikka, located on the south coast, is one of the first sites of Portuguese influence and Catholic missionary activity in Flores. Sikka is still one of the most important weaving centers in Flores. Here you will be introduced to the process of threads, coloring and how the Ikat is made. The workshop will be takes about 30 minutes. Stop at Paga and its beautiful white sandy beach, and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. If you prefer you can wait to have lunch in Wolowaru, where organic cashew nuts are harvested and processed. Continue on to Moni, arriving in the late afternoon. This will be the starting point for a visit to the Kelimutu volcano.

Day 3: Detusoko/Moni – Bajawa
You’ll get off to an early start for the volcano and may even see a spectacular sunrise. Marvel at the 3 lakes constantly changing color en route to Ende. Visit the village of Wologai, one of the few villages in the district with well-maintained houses built in the traditional architectural style. The main ceremonial house is the storehouse for several sacred objects and the myth-spun drum. As the story goes, this instrument is made out of human skin and only used for important annual ceremonies.

Take a break to walk on the beach where local people search for green stones. Then you’ll continue on to Bajawa, arriving in the late afternoon. Bajawa is a small town surrounded by volcanoes, and situated at about 1,200 meters above sea level. You’ll probably need some warm clothing, because the nights here can be quite chilly.

Day 4: Bajawa
Bajawa is a traditional village, where ancestor worship plays an important role in local life. Trek from village to village through a variety of landscapes. The hilly landscape, dotted by bamboo forests, offers some stunning viewpoints over the south coast of Flores. You’ll be invited by friendly locals to enjoy tea inside their home. A local guide will tell you about the habits and customs of the Ngada people. From time to time you’ll find that you have to climb and descend during the trek, but will be rewarded by astonishing view.

In the afternoon the tour leaves for Soa, well known in Flores for its natural thermal springs. Enjoy the hot spring waters, and the natural scenery.

Day 5: Bajawa – Ruteng
On the ride to Ruteng you’ll see locals at work in the fields, and stop where arak, the local drink is made. Ranamese, which means big lake in the local language, is not far from Ruteng. This 11.5-hectare crater lake is surrounded by rainforest and is home to endemic birds.

If you’re interested in learning about the local culture and meeting the friendly people your guide can add a visit to Belahragi. The village features 2 parallel rows of 16 houses. You’ll be welcomed as a guest with a ceremony called ti’I ka ebu nusi, which translates as, to give food to the ancestors. A bamboo flute, or suling, concert makes the visit complete. To reach this village requires a 1-hour walk from the village of Pauleni, on a gradual uphill path.

Day 6: Ruteng – Labuhan Bajo
After breakfast you’ll leave by car for a 90-minute tour around the small villages and rice fields, accompanied by a local guide who will tell you about the area. Ruteng is the capital of the Manggarai area, and surrounded by beautiful rice fields. This is the location of the rare spiderweb rice fields, known locally as lingko. The drive continues to Labuan Bajo, through one of the greenest parts of Flores.

For those who want to learn more about the Manggarai culture, your guide can add a visit to the village of Tado, an eco-tourism community. You will be received with a traditional adat welcome ceremony and caci, a ritual whip fight, which is a major element of Manggarai cultural identity. You can see a number of different activities such as the weaving of mats and baskets and the preparation of traditional medicines.

Day 7: Labuhan Bajo (Boat Trip to Rinca)
In the early morning you’ll sail to Rinca, one of the few places in the world where the magnificent Komodo dragon is found. Take a walk around the island and take in the spectacular views. In the afternoon, you’ll have time to go snorkeling off one of the other islands. At around dusk you’ll head back to Labuan Bajo.
