What You'll Do
  • Marvel at the Opera del Duomo Museum’s grandiose spaces and amazing scenic installations
  • Admire masterpieces by some of the greatest artists of all time
  • See magnificent Brunelleschi’s Dome from the terrace
At the Duomo complex you’ll find Florence’s Opera del Duomo Museum, reopening to the public in late 2015. A collection of 750 important works of art is presented in a venue that is a work of art itself. Head to the terrace to admire Brunelleschi’s Dome.
What to Expect
The Opera del Duomo Museum (Museum of the Works of the Cathedral) is home to a collection of 750 sublime works of art created over the centuries to decorate both the interiors and exteriors of the Cathedral, Baptistery, and Bell Tower, now housed in a new, enormous, and breathtaking setting.

A thrilling experience awaits as you gaze upon the works of Michelangelo, Donatello, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Luca della Robbia, Andrea Pisano, Antonio Pollaiuolo, Andrea Verrocchio, Arnolfo di Cambio, Ghirlandaio and many others.

On this guided visit, you’ll start by entering the great exhibition halls of this former theater, home to the Sala dell’Antica Facciata. You’ll see a reproduction of Piazza del Duomo as it was in the 1300s, with the ancient life-sized façade of Santa Maria del Fiore on one side and, on the other, the 3 original gates of the Baptistery. On the monumental Gothic façade are 40 magnificent sculptures, including the one of St. John the Evangelist by Donatello, St. Luke the Evangelist by Nanni di Banco, and the Madonna of the Glass Eyes by Arnolfo di Cambio.

Next you’ll visit the halls that host 2 of the Museum's most important masterpieces: the deeply moving Pietà del Duomo by Michelangelo, and the heart-rending Penitent Magdalene by Donatello.

The tour continues on the first floor along a lovely illuminated gallery, where you’ll see a surprising series of high-reliefs and 16 statues from Giotto’s Bell Tower, including the famous prophets Jeremy and Abacuc by Donatello.

Visit the amazing Sala della Cupola, home to wooden models of the Dome dating to the 1400s and the Lanterna by Filippo Brunelleschi. Continue to the Galleria delle Cantorie, home to amazing sculptures by Donatello and Luca della Robbia.

The last stop of the visit is the Gallery of the Silver Altar, home to the Altar of St. John and the Cross, which contains a fragment of the Christ Cross.
Your ticket also gives you access to the other monuments of the Great Museum of the Cathedral Complex, which includes the Cathedral, the Crypt and the Baptistery and lets you climb up to the famous Brunelleschi’s Dome and the Giotto’s Bell Tower, to enjoy amazing views of the city. Must be used within 48hours of being issued.

Those who desire to do so may go up to the terrace for an up-close look at magnificent Brunelleschi’s Dome.

After the tour has ended, you can remain at the Museum if you like, and perhaps take a break in the pleasant caffetteria.
