What You'll Do
  • Discover one of Portugal's premier bird-watching spots
  • Enjoy the chance to see over 150 bird species
Fantastic for bird-watching, Lagoa dos Salgados is a well-known coastal lagoon and one of the few wetlands on the western Algarve coast. It’s a very important site for birdlife, including breeding Little Bittern, Purple Heron and Ferruginous Duck.
What to Expect
Lagoa dos Salgados is a wetland formed by a main water area in the confluence of two rivers. The lagoon is isolated from the ocean by a continuous sandy barrier, that only opens with high precipitations or human intervention.

It is an area teeming with bird life with a total of more than 150 bird species having been spotted there. The Black-Winged Stilt is a common local inhabitiant and the Purple Swamphen has a small breeding population, with numbers increasing during winter. During migratory season, this area is very important for the Spoonbill, several waders and also for swallows that feed here in thousands. On the west side of the lagoon there is still a vast idyllic expanse of fields and shrubs, just behind the protected coastal dunes, rich in bird life.

The tour is suitable for people of all ages and all levels of birding watching experience. The guides are very competent and experienced ornithologists with significant knowledge of all bird species in the areas visited.
