Experience the epic landscapes of southern Patagonia on a big ice trek from El Calafate. Cross to the Perito Moreno glacier by boat and then hike on the ice for 3.5 hours. Enjoy lunch on the ice and learn about all the glacier features from expert guides.
What to Expect
Depart El Calafate and journey to the pier at Bajo de las Sombras port, about 6 kilometers before the glacier of Balconies. Board a boat for the 10-minute crossing of the Rico Arm and enjoy breathtaking views of Perito Moreno glacier’s walls of ice.
Upon arrival, check your ice trek gear and pick up the crampons you will need to walk on the ice. Hike the lateral moraine for 1.5 hours to access the glacier, where you will put on your harness and crampons for your safety. Get a breathtaking view of the immense plateau of ice.
Learn about the features of the ice, such as the huge moulins, crevasses and caves. Experience the unique sensation of exploring the glacier from the middle of the ice. Expert bilingual mountain guides will lead you and look after your safety while teaching you the “ways of the ice” along the way. Hike for about 3.5 hours, stopping for lunch on the ice.
Return to the moraine to start your descent back to the port, where the boat will be waiting to take you on a 20-minute journey close to the southern wall of the glacier.
