Eger: Countryside, Culture, and Wine Private Tour
On this full-day tour from Budapest, enjoy a 1.5-hour drive by a comfortable private car to Northeast Hungary, to the city of Eger, where you’ll begin your visit with a guided walk through the famous fortress above the old town. Visit the exhibition on the castle's history. The Castle of Eger is known for its successful defense against the 1552 Ottoman invasion. Today it is a listed and protected historic monument. From the walls of the castle, you’ll have an amazing panoramic view of the old town of Eger. After visiting the fortress, the guided tour continues in the historical city center with charming baroque streets and houses. The tour includes, among other sights, the main square with the town hall and the Minorite church, one of the most beautiful examples of baroque religious architecture in Hungary. Visit the second-largest cathedral in Hungary and the main building of the university (Lyceum) from 1785. Eger offers a number of sites dating from the time of the Ottoman Empire, including the 40-meter-high Turkish Minaret, which is the northernmost in Europe, and the Turkish Bath. The city and surrounding region are also famous for wine. The Valley of the Beautiful Woman is home to numerous wine cellars. Their history goes back to the 18th century or earlier. You can taste the high-quality local red, white, and rosé wines in the historical cellars.
