What You'll Do
  • Visit Melrose Abbey
  • Marvel at the beautiful sights
  • Walk in the footsteps of the mythical Knights Templar
Walk in the footsteps of the Mythical Knights Templar and follow the Holy Grail to one of its most famous sights Rosslyn Chapel. Visit one of the oldest abbeys in Scotland and see the burial site of King Robert the Bruce's Heart.
What to Expect
Heading south from Edinburgh towards the quaint and lovely town of Melrose, stop just before the town at Scott’s View to take in one of the best views you can see anywhere in the United Kingdom. The beautiful spot affords you unsurpassed views of the Tweed Valley and River.

From here move onto Melrose and the magnificent monastic ruins of Melrose Abbey. The abbey was re-founded in the early 12th century for the Cistercian order by David I. Here is where the heart of Robert the Bruce is laid to rest and is marked by a commemorative plaque within the grounds. Bruce was said to have been in command of some Templars at the Battle of Bannockburn, even though it is largely thought that Templars fought on the side of the English.

Make your way back north towards the capital city and make a stop in a historic town named Temple, where the remains of Balantrodoch Temple (preceptory) still stand today. In 1127, the Grand Master of the Templar Order Hugh de Payens met with David I in Scotland and acquired the lands of Balantrodoch. The Temple became the principle Templar seat and Preceptory in Scotland until the Templars were supressed between 1307 and 1312.

Heading towards the historic town of Roslin (Rosslyn/Roslyn), make a stop at one of the most famous sites known to anyone who has heard of the Templars or the Holy Grail, Rosslyn Chapel. Made famous by Dan Brown’s novel The Da Vinci Code, the natural beauty and stonework of this building are unforgettable and you will stop here long enough to take a tour, look around the garden,s and also visit the largely unknown Roslin Castle which is close by the chapel. Venture down to the castle if you dare, some say the ghosts of the past still linger.

Leaving the majestic town of Roslin finally head back to Edinburgh where you can grab a map, seek out the other Templar sites said to exist within the city and continue your journey to find the secrets behind the Templars and maybe, just maybe, you will hear some tales about the Holy Grail.
