- Walk in the footsteps of the mythical Knights Templar
- Discover the ruins of Roslin Castle and visit Rosslyn Chapel
- Go to Melrose Abbey and see where the heart of Robert the Bruce was laid to rest
Continue into Melrose to see the magnificent monastic ruins of Melrose Abbey, re-founded by David I in the early 12th century for the Cistercian order. Discover where the heart of the warrior Robert the Bruce was laid to rest, marked by a commemorative plaque within the grounds. Robert the Bruce was said to have been in command of some of the Knights Templar at the Battle of Bannockburn, even though it is largely thought that the knights fought on the side of the English!
Make your way back north towards Edinburgh stopping in the historic town of Temple on the way. See where the remains of Balantrodoch Temple still stand. In 1127, the Grand Master of the Knights Templar, Hugh de Payens, met with David I in Scotland and acquired the lands of Balantrodoch. The temple became the principle Knights Templar seat and Preceptory of Scotland until the Knights Templar were suppressed between 1307 and 1312.
Next, head towards the historic town of Roslin (formerly known as "Rosslyn"). Stop at a site that will be instantly known to anyone who follows the story of the Knights Templar and Holy Grail. Go to Rosslyn Chapel, made famous by Dan Brown’s best-selling novel "The Da Vinci Code." Admire the natural beauty of the setting and the stonework of the building. Look around the gardens and visit the largely unknown Roslin Castle near to the chapel. Venture down to the castle if you dare: some say the ghosts of the past still linger there.
Leave Roslin and head back to Edinburgh, where you can grab a map to seek out other Knights Templar sites that are said to exist within the city. You are now free to continue your journey independently to uncover the secrets behind the Knights Templar and perhaps hear some tales about the Holy Grail.
