From Taormina: Full-Day Guided Tour of Syracuse

For those traveling to Sicily, Syracuse is not to be missed. Once the most important city in Magna Graecia, it defeated the mighty Athens in 413 and was home to many a great Greek, including the inimitable Archimedes. At the height of its economic, political, and military power, the city had a population of 300,000 and, according to Cicero, was "the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all.” Join a full-day guided bus tour of this great city, which includes a visit to its archaeological sites as well as the island of Ortygia. First, visit the archaeological site, which is situated in the northwest of the town and is home to a staggering number of well-preserved Greek and Roman remains. The main attraction is undoubtedly the Greek theater, which dates back at least until the 5th Century BC. Its cavea is amongst the largest ever built, its 59 rows could accommodate up to 15,000 spectators (there will be a theater set on the archaeological site during summer). Just over the ridge from the theater, you will see the old stone quarries where today there grows a fragrant lemon orchard. Also, visit the famous Ear of Dionysius, a 20m-high, slender pointed arch cut into the rock face about 65m deep. The rock was once used by Dionysius the Tyrant as a prison for his bitterest enemies. After stopping by the Roman amphitheater, continue on to the Archaeological Museum, which contains a great collection of exhibits from all over the Syracuse area. Spend the second half of your day wandering around the beautiful island of Ortygia. It may be a small island, but it's packed with over 2,500 years of history. What people are saying about Ear of Dionysius

Overall rating

4.7
(149 reviews)

After the tour I read the reviews. The Italian guide (also speaking German to some guests) was excellent and informative. I think he was called Natale. Thanks to him! But I was distressed for the first half hour as I couldn’t find the guide, as the time of the tour was not 12 as on the app but at 12,30, and I also had the problem about “converting the ticket” and had to walk up the hill again, watch out for that. Info on the app needs to be revised.

Unfortunately I thought I had paid for everything... instead at the entrance they wanted another €16.50 saying that I had only paid for the guide and not the entrance. Last year in Agrigento it was not like this, after paying online I went in to do the tour with the guide and that was it. I don't understand why it went like this this year?

The tour with Eva was excellent and worth much more than what we paid. She is very knowledgeable and we enjoyed the visit much more with a guide than we would have without one. Eva is a great guide and the place is incredible, especially if you are into history and archaeology. Totally recommended.

Wonderful tour, lasted close to 2hrs. We did have to wait to join for the English guide 30 minutes later than proposed time, but it was no issue. Lots of the time at the quarry, and enough time at both Greek and Roman ruins. Make sure you have a hat/ umbrella.

Fantastic tour. Problems unfortunately related to the organization that manages the Park and not to the Guides.
