Discover the cultural soul of South Africa on a 5-hour township tour from Durban. See why townships are the beating heart of South Africa, feel the dynamic atmosphere of Inanda and KwaMashu, and walk in the steps of some of the world’s great leaders.
What to Expect
Start your tour with an insight into the city’s colonial heritage at the Elephant House, Durban’s oldest home. From there, drive out of Durban and into the townships to walk on the original wooden floors of Mahatma Gandhi’s house.

Then you'll have a chance to pay respects to Dr. John Dube at Ohlange High School where Nelson Mandela cast his vote in South Africa’s long-awaited first democratic elections. Hear the story behind these great leaders and learn about the times when they walked the same footpaths and walkways that you will be stepping in.

Cross into the rural Mzinyathi area and learn about the spiritual significance of the waterfall of the same name. Enjoy a few drinks of beer with the locals before sharing a shisanyama barbecue lunch at a favorite nearby tavern.

Engage with the vendors outside the KwaMashu station with the little bit of Zulu you'll have learned on the tour, and see the variety of wares and products on offer. Then, end the trip with a visit to a family home in K Section and get a more personal insight into township life before heading back to central Durban.
