What You'll Do
  • Enjoy a spice tour of a local garden and learn to pick seasonal fruits from pineapple to passionfruit
  • Learn authentic, home-cooked Balinese recipes in a hands-on cooking demonstration
  • Connect with the culture in an unforgettable way by meeting a local family
Overview
Eat with a local family in their home in this private authentic experience. Visit a traditional Balinese family compound nestled in the terraced foothills north of Ubud, touring a local garden before learning to cook together in their open-air kitchen.
What to Expect
Start this private food adventure with a convenient pick up from your Ubud hotel at 9am or 4pm. If you are not staying in Ubud, make your own way and meet Dewa at a designated meeting location (Alam Sari Resort) near his house.

Your host Dewa and his wife Jero will be hosting you in their traditional home for an authentic Balinese cooking experience. You will begin with a visit to a nearby organic spice garden where local ingredients are grown. You will discover local Balinese spices such as galangal, cinnamon, cloves, vanilla, cacao, and nutmeg and learn about their medicinal properties. You will then walk around Dewa’s family compound where Dewa will give you an insight into the Balinese culture and how they live. You will then join his wife and extended family in the kitchen and help them to cook a range of Balinese dishes, using local ingredients and spices, over a traditional wood-fired oven. The family will explain local philosophies about food sharing as you pound, grind and chop ingredients. You will finish your cooking class with a delicious meal served at a dining area set up around a traditional wood-burning stove adjacent to the family temple. Dishes may include Balinese curry, fish with grated coconut, grilled tuna in banana leaves, steamed chicken tum, chicken with chilli sauce, corn fritters and vegetables in a peanut sauce. Dessert includes fried bananas and jackfruit drizzled with chocolate sauce.

Experience the life of a local family in the lush green of their compound walls and see a side of Bali that few travelers get to see, a truly authentic insider view of Balinese cuisine and culture.
