  • Florence: Florence 360°: The Dome Climb

    6. Florence: Florence 360°: The Dome Climb

Soaring over 300 feet (90 meters) in the air, the dome of Florence Cathedral, Santa Maria del Fiore, or Duomo, as the locals call it, dominates the city’s skyline. Completed in 1434, the dome is still one of the largest in the world. In the 15th century construction of this kind had not been attempted since ancient times; but thanks to the ambitions of a flourishing city and breakthrough Renaissance engineering, the Cathedral dome challenged even the dome of the Pantheon. The Cathedral’s plans were so ambitious that it seemed nearly impossible to build a dome of these proportions. A goldsmith and sculptor with no prior experience in grand-scale construction, Filippo Brunelleschi, solved the problems. Part of Brunelleschi’s solution was the construction of a dome within a dome, a solid brick structure on the inside with a tiled terracotta shell on the outside. Climb to the top of the d...

If you go on a tour of the Duomo, pick this one. Made of Tuscany had a great guide who was punctual, really knowledgeable and it was obvious that Christina knew her history. The climb wasn’t as bad as I thought and the view from the Cupola is breathtaking. The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo is fabulous and my regret is that we couldn’t spend more time admiring the masterpieces there. Of course the Battistero was amazing:) Another reason I would recommend this tour is the very courteous and professional customer service from Angela at the agency. She was always quick to respond to any questions I had. You cannot go wrong if you reserve this tour - really good experience.

We were the only ones booked and received a private tour with our guide. He was very informative about the construction of the duomo and about florence in general. He was easy to locate at the start of the tour (this was a major problem on a GYG tour booked in Milan earlier in the week). Much more enjoyable experience overall!

Lots of useful information about the origin of the Duomo and background, while climbing the Dome. It's not an easy climb, but that made it all the more fun to do. The view of Florence from the top is incredible! Our gide Leonora was very kind, helpful and funny as well.

Very interesting and informative guided tour by bike with Francesco. Good way to get an impression of the city by bike in a small group of people where Francesco could answer our questions and recommend us what to do and where to go during our stay in Florence.

A very informative tour and perfect to get an overview of Firence. Iulia did a great job. Highlight recommended.
