The Colosseum was commissioned by the emperors Vespasian and Titus, and was finished in 80 AD. Its completion was commemorated by 100 days of ceremony and games.

The largest amphitheater in the world, the last gladiator fights were held there in 435 AD. Admission was free for all, and mock naval battles took place upon entry.

How It Survived

How It Survived

Unlike earlier Roman amphitheaters, the materials used were built to last: concrete for the foundations, travertine for the piers, tufa infill and brick-faced concrete.

Behind the Scenes

Behind the Scenes

Although earthquakes have caused some damage, most of the Colosseum still stands. The tour inside this archeological marvel, where you can retrace the steps of the gladiators, is a must-do.

Our insider tips

Admission

You can pre-book a standard ticket online that covers all three monuments in the area: the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. Opening hours are from 8:30 AM until one hour before sunset.

Tours

If you want to do more than just walk in and grab a few shots with your camera, we recommend a small group tour. We’ve done it and it’s well worth it. An expert will teach you about ancient Roman history, architecture, sport and little known facts that make the Colosseum come alive as you walk through it. You can also combine it with the guided tour of the Forum or Palatine Hill.

Esperienza molto positiva. Ottima esperienza. La suggerisco

Rome: Hop-on Hop-off Guided Walking Tour Reviewed by

Amazing tour!!! Highly recommend for anyone who wants to see the Forum, Palatine Hill, and the Colosseum. Do a tour, ask for Dennis. He was WONDERFUL. So full of knowledge of the area and the sites we were seeing. This was my second time to Rome and on a tour of this area and I left this time with so much more information than previously. I definitely will recommend this tour, specifically Dennis, to any friends traveling to Rome.

Don’t waste your time searching/comparing other tours. Samuel was one of the best guide we have ever met! Extremely knowledgeable about several subjects. Time went by extremely quickly while listening to his explanations. I wish Samuel could have been our guide for all the sites we have visited during our time in Rome!

Really detailed tour of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. We had Lumi as our guide and she was very knowledgeable and really fun as well, overall was a really enjoyable tour and I would definitely recommend anyone in Rome to do this tour.

I strongly recommend it! The people are lovely and I have learned so much. Our tour guide Mircea is so passionate, helpful and knowledgeable as well as funny. I had a really good time and would most definitely recommend!
