Full description

Start with pickup at your hotel in Praia and begin a journey to discover the natural beauty of the northern and eastern areas of Santiago Island. Travel for approximately 45 minutes and arrive at the largest banana and coconut plantation in the country. Taste some fresh coconut water taken from the coconut trees.  Continue inland until the village of Orgãos where you will learn to make cuscuz (a cake made from corn flour) and fidjós (fried banana mixed with wheat) with a local family. Next, make your way to the foot of the highest mountain on the island to visit a traditional rum distillery.

Then, head between rocks and valleys to the village of Rui Vaz at an altitude of 800 meters, visit the Monte Txota Natural Park and start an easy 15-minute hike to a viewpoint. Feel the sensation of touching Santiago Island's highest mountain, Pico d'Antonia and, weather permitting, be surprised by the nearby Island of Fogo with its volcano lost on the horizon.

Afterward, be returned to your hotel in Praia.

We were hesitant about whether it would be worth the full day or cost but we are so so glad we did this. It was the highlight of our visit to Santiago as you see so much in a say. The tour guide Maria was amazing she taught us so much about the history, culture and life in Cape Verde. The highlight was definitely the cooking - the people were so so kind and lovely. Fascinating to see the plantations and rum distillery. Tyne views weren’t great due to cloud but this was out of their control!! 10/10
