What to Expect
Early in the 18th century Pondicherry was a French colony, and you’ll find that many residents still speak French in addition to their native Tamil. Pondicherry is well known for the spiritual contribution it made in India’s struggle for freedom. It was the home of renowned freedom fighter and spiritualist Sri Aurobindo.
You’ll be met by the driver in the lobby of your hotel and head out on this full-day excursion. The drive to Pondicherry from Chennai takes around 4 hours.
The main attraction in Pondicherry is the spiritual community known as Aurobindo Ashram, founded by Sri Aurobindo in 1926. It is one of the most popular ashrams in India with Westerners, and one of the most affluent. There are various farms and gardens, a printing press and library, and a number of small-scale industries on site.
You’ll visit the Pondicherry Museum and Sculpture Gallery located in Bharathi Park. In addition to its collection of sculptures it houses important archaeological findings from the Arikamedu Roman settlement.
Aurovilleis a small town situated 6 kilometers to the north of Pondicherry. It was founded as a project of the Sri Aurobindo Society in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa, who was known as The Mother. She was an equal spiritual collaborator to Sri Aurobindo. Mirra Alfassa envisioned a town where unity would be celebrated and all would have a spiritual vocation.
Matrimandir, or the Temple of the Mother, is the geographical and spiritual heart of Auroville. It features a globe that stands 30 meters high, and a lotus-shaped foundation urn.
