Visit Derinkuyu, the largest underground city in Cappadocia and walk through the ancient Ihlara Valley in this full-day tour of the stunning Turkish countryside.
What to Expect
We will pick you up from your hotel between 09:30-10:00 am and take you to the stunning Ihlara Canyon, 28 miles (45 km) southeast of Aksaray.
Ihlara is an ancient valley lined with over 60 rock-cut Byzantine churches, monasteries and chapels dating back to 11th century. The valley is also dotted with underground homes carved from the rock. You will have plenty of time to explore this picturesque valley.
We will then head to Belisirma, a small village next to the river. We will stop for lunch there and you will be able to try some of the local cuisine. You will see brightly dressed locals and experience a side of Turkey quite different from that of the big cities.
After lunch we will stop in Selime, a village situated at the end of the Ihlara Canyon. It has a Star Wars-like landscape and cave houses throughout.
Next up we will guide you through the largest underground city in Cappadoccia. Derinkuyu is approximately 85 meters deep and was used as a shelter by Christians during Roman persecution.
The city was able to shelter tens of thousands of people, as well as animals and food supplies. It housed an olive and wine press, chapels, classrooms, cellars and storage rooms. Wonder at the massive rolling stone doors that prevented invaders from entering.
Inhabitants could live here for weeks or months before returning above ground when it was safe.
At the end of this extensive day we will return to your hotel.
