  • Soviet Potsdam: Private Tour of the Forbidden City

    3. Soviet Potsdam: Private Tour of the Forbidden City

In the summer of 1945, the Cecilienhof Palace and the surrounding "Neuer Garten" park were closed to the public for the Potsdam Conference. The most powerful heads of state in the world came to Potsdam: Joseph Stalin, Harry S. Truman and Winston Churchill. The conference was an end to World War II, but also the starting point of the Cold War. For almost five decades, the Soviet military town No. 7, a “forbidden city”, was located next to the New Garden park. It was one of the most important intelligence sites of the Soviets during the Cold War. Here were, among other things, the German headquarters of the military counterintelligence of the KGB and a remand prison. On the tour you will learn more about the work and life in this forbidden city. Finally, head to the Glienicke Bridge that became world famous as the "Bridge of Spies" where the 2015 Hollywood film of the same name was shot....

I chose this particular tour because it was a 6 hour tour - not sure how a 4 hour tour could have been as informative or paced as well. Johannes, our guide picked us up from our hotel and we enjoyed a private guided tour of Potsdam and its history. Johannes' research and accompanying material brought the past into the present. Lovely stop for lunch - beer hall - great atmosphere smelling the mash cooking. Good food, good company, good sights - can't ask for more.

Our guide, Mr. Raschke, was an almost inexhaustible source of knowledge. The time passed happily, very interesting and very vivid. We were a group of four people, it was pleasant to walk past the other large groups and, in contrast to them, to listen to every explanation of our guide in a relaxed manner and also to be able to comfortably ask questions. A very personal experience!

We had a great and informative trip. Our guide, Nikolai, was very good and took his time explaining the history of Potsdam and answering our questions. It's pretty much a full day tour and worth the time, just be careful there won't be much left to enter Sanssouci at the end.

This day tour can only be recommended to everyone. You are shown a lot and there is also a lot of information about it. A big thank you to Mr. Westerkamp who gave us a very nice trip. We would make such a booking again and again.

Knowledgeable, well told and lots of information beyond the pure tour. Linked to personal experiences and therefore exciting and very interesting.

Maria was excellent and made the history fun with the stories she shared.
