What You'll Do
  • Enjoy superb views of Europe's largest and most active volcano
  • Travel along the fertile lower slopes of Etna, climbing lava fields up to Rifugio Sapienza
  • See the Valle del Bove, the huge natural depression that receives most of the lava during eruptions
Explore the slopes of Europe’s largest active volcano. See old and new lava flows and extinct Silvestri craters. You’re sure to hear volcanic rumblings as you enter the volcano through a cave scroll tunnel! Marvel at the views from the Valle del Bove.
What to Expect
You’ll be picked up at your Catania hotel in the morning and head to Mount Etna for a full-day 4x4 off-road tour of the southern slope.

The volcano dominates the province of Catania. At 3,323 meters Etna is the highest volcano in Europe and its activity is almost constant, characterized by frequent, short eruptions. Head off road in a 4x4 vehicle over the ancient lava flows, passing the Milia forests, and to Rifugio Sapienza. You’ll see the dramatic evidence of eruptions over the past decades.

There will be a stop for lunch (not included in the tour price). Afterwards you’ll head to the Silvestri craters and a lava cave.

With a helmet and flashlight you’ll enter the volcano through a cave scroll, which is a smooth natural tunnel left by the lava at the end of the eruption. The ceiling of the cave scroll acts as insulation, so that the molten mass remains relatively fluid.

Admire the vast Valle del Bove, a natural depression about 20 kilometers wide that receives most of the lava during Etna’s eruptions. From a natural balcony overlooking a wall of about 150 meters, you’ll have spectacular views of the eastern Sicilian coast.
