Explore the Pilanesburg National Park, 90 minutes from Johannesburg, staying at the private game lodge of Black Rhino. Spot elephant, rhino and lion on daily game drives in a remarkable landscape of a 1,200 million year old volcano.
What to Expect
Black Rhino is a private game lodge on the Malaria-free western side of the Pilanesberg National Park, about 90 minutes from Johannesburg. The crater of an extinct volcano is the setting for this magical 3-day experience to spot big game and other creatures of the African bush.
Three concentric ridges or rings of hills forming an amphitheater-like environment enclose the crater. Entering the crater through the hills invites prehistory and ancient times to rise out of the geology, creating an ageless atmosphere.
Its position between the arid Kalahari and the wetter Lowveld means vegetation from both areas thrive. The unique evolution has provided home to a wide variety of game species. Sightings of elephant, black rhino, white rhino and lion are all common on your morning and evening game drives.
After a transfer from Johannesburg to Pilanesberg you will receive a welcome drink and lunch at Black Rhino before taking your first evening game drive. Travel by 4WD vehicle through the bush keeping your eyes peeled for the big game as they emerge from the afternoon heat to feed and water.
You will stop for a sundowner at sunset, with drinks and snacks served against a beautiful African sunset and a sky filling with stars. Return to the lodge for dinner and your first night’s stay.
Rise early for your morning game drive. Coffee and tea, along with snacks, will be waiting for you before you set off. After your morning drive you will return to the lodge for a delicious breakfast and time at leisure. Following lunch and more free time, you will set off in the late afternoon for your second evening game drive and sundowner.
All of the Big Five are represented at Pilanesberg. Keep your eye out for buffalo and leopard as your ranger navigates the open grassland and wooded valleys. Return to your lodge for dinner.
Before your transfer back to Johannesburg you will get a final morning game drive. Look out for zebra, giraffe, wild dog and hyena. Keep your eyes open for more than 300 species of bird.
A game relocation programme called Operation Genesis has led to many rare and endangered species being introduced to the park, making this an intense experience as you try to track them down.
