What to Expect
Just 80 km (50 miles) south of Cairo, the El Fayoum Oasis represents an example of the ingenuity displayed by ancient Egyptian engineers.
El-Fayoum city was the main center of worship of Sobek, the crocodile god. See the 200 huge wooden waterwheels located throughout the oasis in among the palm and mango trees. After visiting this incredible site, you'll head to Qarun Lake in Fayoum Down. Qarun lake is believed to be the oldest natural lakes in the world, and is the 3rd largest lake in Egypt.
On the other side of the Oasis, there are many ruined temples at Karanis, the ancient city. Then you'll drive to Qasr Qaroun about 55 km (35 miles) north-west of Fayoum City. It consists of the well-preserved temple and remains of the Graeco Roman City of Dionysius.
Continue on to Wadi Al Rian, where you can enjoy a boat ride before heading back to Cairo.
