What to Expect
Visit the Northern Walls and 3 Gates, where visitors may climb the ramparts. Then, visit Sabils and Kuttabs, or the public fountains and Islamic elementary school. Visit private houses, which are masterworks of domestic architecture. Then go to Wikalas (caravanserais and merchants’ inn) in the medieval city, all were built according to the same plan.

One of Cairo's many epitaphs is the "City of 1,000 Minarets". You'll visit mosques and madrasas, where law and theology were taught. Then visit some mausoleums, which are a particularly intricate assemblage of inlaid stone and stucco. Stop for a visit to Khanqahs, a sort of monastery or lodge for the Sufis. Visit the religious and Funerary Complexes, which include a number of structures besides the Mosque and may not be found attached together.

Visit Al-Azhar Mosque and the university. Then go to see Bashtak Palace before moving on to the Hammam (public bath), used to cleanse the body and soul. Discover the local markets and the abundance of carpets, clothes, tents, food, copper, spices, and antiques. Wander around the Egyptian Textile Museum which has a wonderful collection of textile, the first specialist museum in textile in the Middle East and the third in the world.

Visit synagogues located in the Jewish Quarter. There were 13 Synagogues, but only 3 have survived to the present day. Then visit churches like Saint Mary Church and the Church of Saint George.
