Spend the day in Egypt’s “second capital”, as you see the bustling street life, and ancient wonders. Your guided tour will take you to the best sites Alexandria has to offer, and will add greatly to your Egyptian adventure.
What to Expect
Alexandria is a sight to behold, and it’s no wonder it’s often called the “Pearl of the Mediterranean. Alexandria is the largest city lying directly on the Mediterranean Coast, the city is home to some 4.1 million inhabitants, and an important stop on any traveller’s Egyptian adventure.
Your day trip to Alexandria will bring you face to face with many of the wonders of the ancient world. After being picked up at your hotel in Cairo, you will travel in first class fashion the three hours down to Alexandria. Once we arrive, we will experience the wonder of the New Library of Alexandria (Bibliotheca Alexandria). This rebuilt monument to the great Library of Alexandria continues the tradition of learning and knowledge sharing, that has been around since the 3rd century BCE.
As Alexandria is often called the second capital of Egypt, we will make sure to spend plenty of time walking around the streets and visiting the most important sites. Pompay’s Pillar is just one of these sites, and offers the visitor the chance to imagine the grandeur of what must have existed in the 4th century when it was built for Emperor Diocletain as a part of his temple of the Serapis. The 75ft (25m) column is an awesome structure, and nearby we will find subterranean galleries housing the remains of ancient bulls and even three Sphinxes!
After a walk around these ruins, we will visit the Qaitbay Citadel. Move forward in time and walk in the Sultan of Egypt's shoes, and imagine life here during the 15th century when the fortress was constructed. At the Citadel, we will also have the chance to visit the Roman Catacombs, which is the largest Roman cemetery consisting of three levels of cut rock.
Finally, before returning back to your hotel in Cairo, we’ll have the chance to visit the Montazah Palace – a spectacular castle and grounds built in 1892. Your day will conclude with a stroll around these gardens, once used for hunting and relaxation by the last ruler of the Muhammad Ali Dynasty, Khedive Abbas II.
