Fly to Lizard Island and spend 3 nights aboard a yacht for some spectacular diving in Cod Hole. Both beginner and advanced scuba divers will have many opportunities to explore the amazing Great Barrier Reef and encounter the exciting marine life.
What to Expect
Showcasing the best of the Great Barrier Reef, this tour takes you on 12 dives approximately 100-150 miles north of Cairns, and is suitable for both beginner and advanced scuba divers. Spend three nights on board a yacht and explore the amazing marine life and the fascinating Cod Hole.
This tour starts with a flight to Lizard Island, where you will have a birds-eye view of the Great Barrier Reef. Half of the 150-mile flight is at a very low 180 meters (600 feet) above the sites you will later be diving in along the Great Barrier Reef.
Explore Lizard Island and see where the famous English navigator James Cook climbed in 1770 to find a way out of the labyrinth of reefs. Naturalist Joseph Banks lamented in his ship's log that he had too little time to study the wealth of strange creatures he saw in the waters of the Great Barrier Reef.
This 55-mile turquoise chain of ribbon reefs from Lizard Island to Cooktown is the most prized dive region of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The currents that channel between the ribbon reefs attract large fish populations and this is where you can see more of the Great Barrier Reef’s 1,500 fish and 400 coral species than anywhere else.
On your dives you will have many opportunities to encounter the exciting marine life, from pygmy seahorses to manta rays and whales. The Great Barrier Reef has 9 species of anemone fish, 43 species of butterfly fish, 1001 species of nudibranch, and 6 of the world’s 7 turtle species.
One of the Great Barrier Reef’s most amazing phenomena awaits you at the Cod Hole. Swim with the ‘small diver size’ or ‘giant fish size’ potato cod. Spend the dive amongst shallow sunlit coral gardens of Acropora coral or venture deeper into the parallel gullies forming the front of the reef where huge Queensland groupers face into the current.
You will dive in the waters at Pixie Pinnacle, where you may find harlequin ghost pipefish, leafy scorpion fish, and lace scorpion fish. Vertical Gardens is a natural amphitheater, and home to a herd of large green bump head parrotfish. They make an awesome procession crunching their way through the reef!
