Explore the medieval Castello district of Cagliari on a 3-hour walking tour, and discover the narrow streets and artisan workshops of the Middle Ages. End with an aperitivo tasting of typical Sardinian produce, including wines, cheese, bread and salami.
What to Expect
Enjoy a cultural walk through the streets of Cagliari’s Castello neighborhood to discover the Sardinian capital’s main monuments from the Middle Ages.
Castello is the most important of the city’s 4 historic districts and located on a prominent limestone hill 60 feet (100 meters) above sea level. Learn how the Pisans founded Castello in the 13th century, fortifying it with walls, towers, and ramparts to enclose the new offices of the civil, military, and religious establishments.
Accessed through the historic gateways of the walls that still surround much of Castello, isolating it from the rest of the city, the most important landmarks all feature on your walk, including the Torre di San Pancrazio and Torre dell 'Elefante, built to protect the city from Moorish and Genoese attacks.
Admire the remains of the ramparts, and go to the imposing Cathedral, restored in the 1930s to replace its Baroque façade with a more authentic Pisan Medieval architecture. End with an aperitivo tasting of some typical produce of Sardinia, including local wines, cheese and salami.
