Trace Jewish culture in Budapest from the Middle Ages to today on a 3-hour walking tour. A historian docent will take you on a guided walk through the vibrant and ongoing history of Jews in Budapest, with a focus on rememberance and revival.
What to Expect
The walking tour of Jewish Budapest is a 3-hour journey that takes you on a guided walk through the history of the Jewish experience in Budapest. Learn about the dynamic and ongoing history of Jews in Budapest, from the Middle Ages to today.

Your tour will be guided by a docent historian who focuses mainly on Erzsébetváros, the 7th district of Budapest and the heart of the historic Jewish quarter. Walk down Andrassy Street, a World Heritage site known both for its importance in finance and commerce and the role it played in aiding 19th-century Jews fleeing pogroms. With 25% of Budapest being Jewish in 1900, there are many lasting remnants of Jewish culture from this period, including kosher butcher shops and "hidden" synagogues.

Next you will learn about the impact of World War II on Budapest and its Jewish community. You will walk the course of walls erected as part of a ghetto that confined Jews and observe remnants of homes labeled "yellow star houses" by the Germans. Your expert docent will inform you about the deportation of Jews from Budapest and contextualize the local history within the larger context of the Holocaust in Europe.

Discover the contemporary experience of Jewish culture in Budapest. Learn about the recent re-emergence of the Jewish quarter and about the vibrant Orthodox Jewish community. See several synagogues, including the Rumbach Street Synagogue by Otto Wagner, and Dohany Synagogue, known as the largest functioning synagogue in the world today. Also visit a ritual bath and several kosher shops before completing your tour with convenient proximity to the Jewish Museum.

If requested privately and scheduled on either a Friday evening or Saturday morning, it is possible to combine this walk with attendance at services for small groups. Please indicate your interest in this in the "remarks for supplier" section of your booking.
