What to Expect
Known locally as the “Hungarian Sea,” Lake Balaton is the largest freshwater lake in Central Europe and the 2nd most popular tourist destination in Hungary after Budapest. Covering an area of approximately 229 square miles and almost 9 miles wide at its widest point, it also extends for 48 miles from east to west.

Easy to reach from Budapest, this full-day tour will visit the town of Herend, famous for its long tradition of porcelain manufacturing. The Herend Porcelain Factory is one of the largest ceramic factories in the world that still produces hand-painted and gilded porcelain.

You will have some free time to shop before joining your guide at the Porcelánium Café where you can drink coffee out of real porcelain cups.

Continue your tour with a visit to the Tihany Peninsula on the north shore of Lake Balaton. The spit of land extending out on to the lake is most noted for the Benedictine Abbey at Tihany village. Dating from 1055 AD, it was extensively rebuilt in a Baroque style in the mid 18th-Century, and boasts one of the finest views of the lake.

Take a short walk through Tihany village, stopping at folk art shops. You will then sit down to enjoy a 3-course lunch at a local “Csárda,” a traditional, rustic style restaurant.

Before your drive back to Budapest, you will stop at Balatonfüred, the first spa town in Hungary and a tourist resort beloved by yachters. The quaint but bustling town is home to dozens of listed buildings from the mid 18th through 19th-Century.
