This tour takes you along the Fagaras ridge, which crosses the entire Transylvanian Alps, camping along the way. You will climb Romania's three highest peaks and discover the stunning beauty of the region.
What to Expect
On day one, depart from Bucharest at 06:00 and drive by car to Sibiu, passing by the beautiful valley of the river Olt. The tour will reach Sibiu by 11:00. In Sibiu, last-minute preparations can be made before you discover this magical town for the rest of the day. On day two, you will drive to the Poiana Neamtului cabin, where the trek will start. After three hours through woodland, you will reach the Barcaciu cabin.

After having a quick lunch in the cabin, aim for your target of the day: the beautiful glacial lake of Avrig. After three hours you will be on the ridge trail, just by the side of the lake and under the impressive wall of Ciortea Peak. Camp here for the night.

Day three is the first day on the ridge trail, and it will be long and arduous: prepare yourself for about ten hours hiking. However, it is worth it: this trail will take you through one of the most beautiful and rockiest sections of the route. Scara (2308m) is the first peak you will climb during the day.

Passing along two other peaks using a broad trail, you will we reach the peak of Serbota. From here begins the most challenging ridge section of the Fagaras ranges. Go along an exposed ridge called Custura Saratii, while making use of the permanent cables put into place for the most difficult passages.

Continue on a steep slope to the second-highest peak in Romania, Negoiu (2535m). The views here are truly simply spectacular in all directions. Descend towards the second glacial lake on the ridge trail. This is the lake of Caltun just below the peak of the same name, where you will camp.

Day four is easier, but still beautiful, passing many dramatic peaks along the trail ridge, just above 'the most beautiful road in the world' according to the Top Gear TV show. Climbing the Capra Peak, you will see your camping spot for the night, next to one of the most beautiful glacial lakes in Romania – lake Capra. That night, head to Balea lake and cabin to have a good hot meal, fully deserved.

On day five, you will be on the Eastern section of the trail ridge, and aiming for the highest peak in Romania, Moldoveanu (2544m), although you will reach this on the next day. Camp at Podragu cabin, where several beautiful lakes dot the landscape. On day six, you will finally ascend Moldoveanu, to marvel at the stunning views, before heading down to another glacial lake to pitch camp for the last time.

Day seven begins with descent to the beautiful 'Bad Valley' for three hours, before pick-up by car to drive an unpaved 40km road. In the afternoon, you will reach the lovely city of Campulung, one of the oldest cities of medieval Romania. Visit this in the day before celebrating in the evening. The following day, return to Bucharest (a three-hour drive).
