Explore Stradbroke Island on Australia’s Gold Coast to spot majestic humpback whales, and meet a couple of resident koalas. Go to the best vantage points of “Straddie” and enjoy a scenic hike along the North Gorge Walk.
What to Expect
This 6-hour tour is designed to give you a glimpse of the best vantage spots for whale watching on North Stradbroke Island, a barrier sand island between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Following a hotel pick-up for those staying on “Straddie,” or a pick-up at the water taxi terminal for those coming from Cleveland, drive through Dunwich to Main Beach, looking for resident koalas.

Stop for morning tea and some Aussie Damper (unleavened bread baked over a campfire), then keep a look out for whales as you drive along the coast, Upon arrival at North Gorge, there’s approximately 5.5 miles (9 kilometers) of beach to enjoy. For the more adventurous, you will have time to do the complete North Gorge Walk to the most easterly point in Queensland, where you will be rewarded with a popular scenic outlook.

Continue searching for humpback whales from the beach, and look out for dolphins, turtles, manta rays and sharks. The whales are present off the coast of Straddie from June to November. A picnic lunch will be served at “Captain Cook’s Seat,” just in front of a grassy hill with superb views. Continue whale watching after lunch until approximately 14:00, and then drive back to Dunwich to catch the 14:25 water taxi to Cleveland. Or return to your Straddie hotel.

Those returning to the mainland will be back at Cleveland by about 15:00, although there is also the option to stay at Point Lookout for longer, and return via bus at a later time if it suits.
