Explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Fraser Island on a day trip from Brisbane. Drive along the scenic roads of the Glass House Mountains, cross to Fraser Island by ferry, see forests of satinay and kauri trees, look for indigenous animals and more.
What to Expect
Depart Brisbane and pass the Glass House Mountains and Steve Irwin Way en route to the Noosa River Ferry, Sunshine Coast (times permitting) and Cooloola Beach Highway. Travel by 4WD vehicle alongside the surf beach and colored hills of Double Island Point before arriving at Rainbow Beach.
Here, enjoy a short break before continuing to Inskip Point and the sandy beaches where you will board a ferry to Fraser Island. All tickets and fees for Fraser Island National Park have been arranged prior to your arrival. Cruise across the bay and take photos of Fraser Island's west coast and Hervey Bay along the way. Keep a lookout for dolphins, turtles, dugongs, sharks, eagles, sea birds and fish in the sea.
Upon arrival at Fraser Island, a local guide will provide information and tell stories, old and new, as you continue by 4WD vehicle to the 75-mile surf beach. Look for dingoes, kangaroos and whales (in season) as you cover the southern tip of Fraser Island, including Hook Point, and cross as many as 8 freshwater creeks.
Discover the world's largest rainforest growing in sand, and see Satinay and Kauri Forest on the way to the Eco Boardwalk. Go to famous Wanggoolba Creek in the Central Station Rainforest, and travel past Pile Valley and Satinay Forest to Lake McKenzie. Take souvenir photos and swim and relax on the lake's white sand beaches. Enjoy a picnic lunch, with cold drinks and fresh fruits, at the lake or in the rainforest.
Then, return via the Eurong Beach Resort, a 75-mile surf beach highway, Govi Creek and Fraser Island Research and Learning Center in the village of Dilli. Take photos of Double Island and the colored sands before boarding the ferry back to the mainland. Pause for a while at Rainbow Beach or Noosa before your return journey to Brisbane.
