Explore the historic castles and villages of the Dordogne on a private tour with an American driver/guide, and see scenic towns and sites such as the prehistoric cave art of Lascaux, the vineyards of Monbazillac, Chateau de Beynac, and much more.
What to Expect
Explore the picturesque towns, gardens, and castles of the Dordogne region with a personal American driver as your translator and guide for 2 touring days. They will provide a unique ex-pat interpretation of the sights visited, which can be tailored to your preferences.
The 2-day tour includes a pick-up from your hotel in Bordeaux, Toulouse, Sarlat, Bergerac, Tours, or anywhere in France. Then, experiencene magnificent vistas, the finest gastronomy, and wine tasting adventures in the land of the Royal Musketeers and Eleanor of Aquitaine.
Visit the rock shelter of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, site of the discovery of the first 5 skeletons of Cro-Magnons, the earliest known examples of homosapiens. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, partly due to its proximity to the Lascaux Caverns, Les Ezyies is also ideal to explore the Grottes de Cougnac, where you can admire the prehistoric art in its original caves.
Discover one of the most alluring medieval towns in France at Sarlat. Built around a Benedictine abbey of Carolingian origin, the town center boasts impeccably restored stone buildings that are some of the most representative of 14th century France.
Admire the lofty Château de Rocamadour, perched on the side of a gorge, and famous for its sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Get panoramic views of 3 castles from the Château de Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, dominating the valley of the Dordogne River.
Visit Chateau de Beynac to see one of the best-preserved castles of the Dordogne. Its austere appearance, perched on a limestone cliff, includes double crenellated walls, a double barbican, and double moats, one of which was formed from a deepened natural ravine.
Go to the Chateau de Milandes, former home of the American singer Josephine Baker, the first African American female to star in a major motion picture. With her husband, Baker renovated the beautiful chateau to live with their 12 adopted children from 9 different nationalities, creating what they fondly called the “World Village.” Another charming village is Domme, built on cliffs overhanging the Dordogne River, where many of the Knights Templar were imprisoned. You can still see some of their graffiti on the tower gates.
Wander among the topiary creations of the Jardins de Marqueyssac, with panoramic views over the Dordogne River, and visit the romantic Eyrignac Gardens, where all the flowers are blue, white, and yellow.
Other highlights of your tour can include the restored 12th-century Chateau de Commarque, the 15th-century Chateau de Jumilhac, and the picturesque town of Monpazier (a member of “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France” or “Most Beautiful Villages of France”). Taste the sweet wines of the vineyards of Monbazillac, and marvel at the dramatic gorge landscape of La Roque Gageac, another of the “Most Beautiful Villages of France.”
