If you want to know more about the recent history of Berlin and learn about the Berlin Wall, the German division and the Secret Services, this is the tour for you.
What to Expect
To understand the history of the Berlin Wall, the tour will start alternatively from Checkpoint Charlie or the Palace of Tears, where it is possible to set foot on the former crossing point between East and West Berlin. There, step by step, you will hear how Germany and Berlin became divided.
The visit will proceed towards the Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Strasse, where a stretch of land has been filled with signs and symbols as an homage to what happened in those exact places and at the border: people jumped from windows, ran through tunnels or stared in disbelief at what was happening right before their eyes. You will see a piece of the Wall that is still standing, and what the the "Death Strip" looked like. You'll see how some train stations became "ghost stations", and get a visit to a specific exhibition on why some stations were erased from the geography of the city and from the memory of the people.
After seeing the Soviet architecture of the former Stalin Allee, you can decide whether you want to go at the Stasi Museum, a place where you can discover fascinating details about the Secret Services and life in East Germany, or the East Side Gallery, where artists from all over the world have painted over the Wall.
